Cold winter weather could heat up Florida home sales

January 18, 2011 - Real estate agents in the Sunshine State are counting on continued cold weather across the country to bring a flurry of buyers moving to Florida.

Brokers say they received a welcome bit of positive marketing when it was revealed Florida was the only state in the country last week that didn't have snow on the ground. It was even snowing on top of the highest peaks in Hawaii, traditionally another winter haven. As a result, many agents have stepped up their marketing techniques and began advertising Florida as a warm-weather haven, particularly effective at a time of the year when many Americans are digging their cars out of the snow.

But others say the warm weather is just one of many benefits for those considering relocating to Florida.

"Prices are affordable here and the temperatures make it a much better place." agent Euceny Deanto told Florida Today. "I always say that Florida is a dream location, not only for people that are retiring but people living in other states. Here they have a little bit of everything."

Buyers in Florida are also unpacking their moving boxes in homes that are often heavily discounted. According to ZipRealty, home listings in Jacksonville had their prices cut an average 2.6 times - the highest rate in the nation, and other Florida cities were not far behind.
