Source: Home break-ins down during recession

November 12, 2010 - During economic recessions people expect to see the rate of home break-ins jump; not the case this year, reports National Public Radio (NPR).

According to NPR's blog, burglaries have decreased across the country this year, in some places by as much as 30 percent.

In Los Angeles, the number of home break-ins during the first nine months of 2009 was down 6 percent from the same period in 2008. In Phoenix, there were 4,000 fewer burglaries in the first three quarters of this year than in the same period last year.

Boston experienced 335 fewer break-ins over the first three quarters of this year and in Minneapolis, they were down 15 percent from last year, reports NPR.

The news source notes that the FBI will not have data on the total number of burglaries nationally until late next year and says it is too soon to know why there has been a downward trend in home break-ins.

One possible reason for a decrease in home break-ins could be homeowners installing an alarm system on their property. When choosing a home security system company, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) suggests asking friends and family for a referral, viewing ESA's website for a list of companies that have agreed to follow the National Code of Ethics and contacting several companies and asking for an inspection, recommendation and quote in writing in order to compare different packages and prices.
