Security important when moving to new home

March 8, 2011 - When shopping for a new home, families often take the time to check the condition of the property as well as certain amenities. A report says it's also important for homebuyers to consider the safety features of the home they're moving to.

According to the DIY Network, it's important for those moving into a new home to survey the property's locks, window latches and other security features once they've committed to buying. Changing the locks on all front doors and installing deadbolts is essential, but the network also suggests purchasing a home security system that sends an alert to the local police department if an intruder triggers the alarm. New homeowners are also advised to prominently display window stickers and lawn signs that make it obvious they have an alarm system, which experts say can deter burglaries.

The source also suggested that homeowners survey their lawn for areas where intruders might hide, including tall bushes or shrubbery. By installing motion sensor lights, they can both scare away potential burglars while also welcoming friends, said the report.

Relocating families are often advised to consider a burglar alarm at their new residence. New technologies are developing systems which are more intuitive and offer a range of features, such as detecting fires, as well.
