"Cash for Caulkers" may be a way to green your home

December 16, 2010 - For those who have been thinking about making their homes more energy efficient, you could soon receive a little federal assistance to do so.

President Obama is urging Congress to allocate money to homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their homes while providing a much needed boost to jobs in the building trade.

"Cash for Caulkers," as the program has been called, would allow homeowners to upgrade such things in their homes as doors, windows and insulation to more eco friendly models.

One proposal by the House Democrats would apportion $20 billion from February's economic stimulus package to be used to offer incentives of $1,000 to more than $3,000 for homeowners to use for home repairs and maintenance projects that improves the energy efficiency of their home, reports the newspaper.

Some of the major upgrades that homeowners may consider to improve their energy efficiency include adding insulation. Energy Star states that homeowners can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs by sealing and insulation their homes. Another home improvement may include putting on a reflective roof. Energy Star roofs reflect more of the sun's rays causing less heat to be absorbed into your home, thus reducing cooling costs.
