Safety is a key concern for renters

October 29, 2010 - October is National Crime Prevention month and nowadays many people are concerned about their safety, which may be a very important factor when moving and trying to select a rental property.

According to a national survey conducted by Apartments.com, 96 percent of respondents said that neighborhood crime rates factored in to their decision of where they chose to live. Additionally, 66 percent of renters feel extremely to moderately safe in their current neighborhood, a drop from 78 percent on the 2006 survey.

Renters also responded that they are taking more preventative measures to keep themselves safe, such as, not allowing strangers into the apartment community, installing deadbolts and using timers for lights, televisions and radios, according the findings.

Renters would even be willing to pay more for such building safety features. Some 49 percent said they would be willing to pay more for an in-unit security system, 45 percent for 24/7 in building security patrol men and a doorman and 42 percent for security cameras on the apartment community property.

The National Crime Prevention Council offers some safety tips to renters. Make sure apartment doors have a deadbolt lock and peephole; check to see if hallways, stairways, elevators, laundry rooms and parking lots are well-lighted throughout the day and night; and get to know neighbors to look out for and help each other.
