Microsoft to use Xbox to rival cable television

January 18, 2010 - Individuals who are planning to relocate may soon have another option to consider when choosing their new cable or satellite TV provider.

Microsoft has launched an initiative to make its subscription gaming service, Xbox Live, provide the same services as a cable channel, the New York Times reports.

In an attempt to appeal to parents and grandparents, the company has begun producing its own shows for subscribers, including 1 vs. 100, an interactive game show.

Microsoft has also entered talks with the Walt Disney Company to strike a programming deal with ESPN, through which live streaming of sporting events would be made available for a per-subscriber fee.

The Xbox system already allows users to surf the internet, watch online movies or episodes of TV shows and order films through Netflix.

Providers of other gaming consoles have launched similar initiatives, as users of Sony's PlayStation can watch BBC shows or receive updates from the Weather Channel and Nintendo Wii owners have access to their Netflix accounts.

These offerings may benefit real estate owners and renters, as increased competition among cable companies has some providers considering similar pay-by-channel initiatives, Reuters reports.
