Google, Intel and Sony to present new television service

March 18, 2010 - Homeowners and renters may soon have a new alternative to cable and satellite TV, as Google may be releasing its own television service soon.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the search engine giant is in talks with Intel and Sony concerning the early development stages of a web-based programming service. Insiders say that the new platform could be included in forthcoming television models, Blu-Ray players or set-top boxes.

This development would not be the search engine's first attempt to move from the computer screen to the living room screen. Previous reports revealed that Google is already working with satellite TV provider Dish Network to test a TV search service that would enable users to find TV listings as well as video from websites such as YouTube.

In addition, industry experts have suggested that the company will try to make its Adroid operating system for cell phones television-compatible.

Wired News reports that the project - which has been dubbed Google TV but not formally named - may include access to Hulu, games and applications for social networking.
