Private housing for Louisville students under construction

September 17, 2010 - Starting next fall, a number of students at the University of Louisville will begin moving into new privately-owned student housing.

Built on the site of the recently-demolished Masterston's Restaurant, a new four-story student apartment building is expected to be complete by next fall, reported Kentucky's WDRB-TV. The developers, Investment Property Advisors, told the station that the building will accommodate more than 500 relocating students in upscale, fully-furnished rental units. Students will be able to choose units ranging from one- to four-bedrooms, and will share a common living room and full-sized kitchen with their roommates, said the report.

Rents will start at $650 per month, said the report, but many older students looking for a little freedom from their dorm are not likely to mind the price. While freshmen and sophomores typically rely on traditional dorm rooms for their sense of community and support, juniors and seniors often prefer moving into off-campus apartments, the university's dean of students, Michael Mardis, told the station.

However, moving into an off-campus apartment does bring a new set of challenges, such as issues of personal security. Students are advised to take steps to ensure their own security when living off-campus, which could include talking to their landlord about the building's home security system and ensuring the outside of their building is property lit.
