Moving to Colorado
People are moving to Colorado in record numbers -- and for good reason. With an annual average of 300 sunshine-filled days a year, Colorado offers up its blue skies and cool temperature making Colorado a great place to live. The state's 10 national parks, 13 national forest and grasslands and 42 state parks provide abundant opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

First visited by Spanish explorers in the 1500s, the territory was claimed for Spain by Juan de Ulibarri in 1706. The U.S. obtained eastern Colorado as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the central portion in 1845 with the admission of Texas as a state, and the western part in 1848 because of the Mexican War. Breathtaking scenery and excellent skiing make Colorado a prime tourist destination. As far as residence, Colorado offers a strong economy that has grown at a rate considerably faster than the rest of the country. This has created a vigorous real estate market in the state, providing exceptional variety of Colorado real estate for homebuyers.

Capital City: The capital city of Colorado is Denver.

Population: There are currently five million people that reside in Colorado.

Local Activities: There is a lot you can do to keep busy in Colorado. Three of Colorado's leading museums are located in Denver: the Colorado History Museum, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Denver Art Museum. The Denver Botanic Gardens is also in Denver. One of the most spectacular tourist attractions is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which contains the narrow gorge cut by the Gunnison River. Colorado National Monument, near Fruita, features deep gorges and huge solitary rock formations, such as the Independence Rock.

Economy: The state's economy broadened from its mid-19th century roots in mining when irrigated agriculture developed, and by the late 19th century, raising livestock had become important. Early industry was based on the extraction and processing of minerals and agricultural products. Current agricultural products are cattle, wheat, dairy products, corn, and hay. The Colorado economy ranked 20th largest in the U.S. in 2008 with a gross state product estimated at $ 248.6 billion. Today, the federal government is a major economic force including the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Air Force Academy. Other industries include food processing, transportation equipment, machinery, chemical products, minerals such as gold and molybdenum and tourism.

State Bird: The state bird of Colorado is the lark bunting.

State Tree: The state tree is the blue spruce.

State Flower: The rocky mountain columbine (Aquilegia caerules) became the state flower in 1899.
