Aurora, Colorado

Tree-lined streets, splendid views of the mountains, open prairie and an abundance of neighborhood parks make Aurora neighborhoods the ideal place to call home. Located directly east of downtown Denver, Aurora is Colorado's third-largest city by population, with over 300,000 residents. The city continues to grow and is made up of a diverse population. Aurora is a favorite family community and an area known throughout Colorado as a safe and fun moving destination.

History:
In 1891, Donald Fletcher founded the town of Fletcher on the plains east of Denver, naming the town after himself. The real estate mogul left two years later, leaving the new residents with bond payments for non-existent water. The town was renamed Aurora (Latin for dawn) in 1907, and remained a small community until after World War II. World attention focused on Aurora for seven weeks during the fall of 1955, as President Dwight D. Eisenhower recovered from a heart attack at local Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. Postwar suburban development transformed the town into what became the fastest growing city in the country during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Aurora's first professional sports franchise, the Aurora Cavalry in the International Basketball League, began play in 2006. In 2004, Aurora was honored as the Sports Illustrated magazine's 50th Anniversary "Sportstown" for Colorado because of its exemplary involvement in facilitating and enhancing sports.

Interstate 70 and E-470 have evolved into major business and industry magnets, with thousands of acres in business parks hosting major distribution centers for some of the nation’s top companies. East on I-70 in Aurora is Front Range Airport, which is being transformed into the 6,700-acre TransPort, an international business project linking air, train and truck transportation with industry and employment centers.
