Incentives benefit energy-efficient homeowners

January 11, 2010 - Real estate owners who are considering home repair and maintenance projects may benefit from government-funded incentives, such as those available through the Maine Home Performance program.

Maine Governor John E. Baldacci has announced that state residents can receive up to $3,000 in rebates for weatherizing their homes.

Additionally, the program requires that these improvements must earn homeowners savings of at least 25 percent on the cost of their utilities.

The state government is offering the incentives as part of an effort to weatherize all homes and half of businesses over the next 20 years.

Possible improvements that may qualify homeowners for a rebate include "weather sealing, insulation, and basic steps to maximize the efficiency of the home's heating system," said Maine Public Utilities Commission Chair Sharon Reishus.

Government officials expect the program will result in an energy cost savings of 25 to 50 percent per household and a reduction in carbon emissions.

Homeowners may consider making similar improvements or relocating to newly constructed homes with energy efficient features in order to save on their heating and cooling bills.
