Reducing hot water usage can lead to lower utility bills

March 1, 2010 - During the winter months, some homeowners and renters could be plagued by high heating and electricity costs. However, these bills may be lowered by making simple changes around the home that can reduce hot water usage.

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), taking a short shower instead is more cost-effective than taking a bath. Individuals who lower their water heater's temperature to 120 degrees may experience optimal savings on these bills.

Those who wish to keep their temperature higher may still lower their costs, as the DOE says that consumers can expect savings of three to five percent on their bills for every 10 degrees they turn down their water heaters.

Manipulation of other appliances can also lower costs, as changes to dishwashing and laundry practices can significantly reduce hot water usage. Washing most clothes in cold water can lower the strain on the water heater, as can using the dishwasher sparingly.

This could mean only running the machine when it is completely full or choosing shorter, cooler cycles. However, homeowners should be sure that their water heater's settings are warm enough to clean dishes properly, as temperatures that are too low could have negative effects on a family's health.
