Smart meter users can track their energy consumption online

March 24, 2010 - Homeowners and renters who use smart meters to monitor their energy usage may be able to save money on their utility bills by tracking their consumption online.

The Star-Telegram reports that the Texas Public Utility Commission has announced the launch of a website that enables power customers who have installed smart meters in their houses or apartments to track their electricity use.

Individuals who access the website will be able to estimate the cost of their monthly bills by generating daily, weekly or monthly reports. Website tools can break down each household's consumption by intervals that may be as small as 15 minutes.

Officials from Oncor Electric Delivery, a company that distributes the smart meters, told the news source that consumers who opt for this service could use the information to reduce their electricity bills by an average of 10 percent. For a typical single-family household, this could translate to $200 in annual savings.

Pacific Gas and Electric is taking similar steps to help homeowners reduce their energy costs, as the company will soon send out phone and email alerts that are intended to help them lower their bills, according to the corporate website.
