Save money on energy bills

June 16, 2010 - A number of different costs must be considered when moving to a different area, utilities bills included.

If consumers are worried about utility costs being greater in their new home, there are certain steps that can be taken in order to reduce the amount of energy used.

Dominion customer solutions and energy conservation vice president Ken Barker said that "renters as well as homeowners can save on their electric bills. These are easy and effective measures to help customers use energy wisely and reduce their costs."

Cost-free measures include closing drapes to block heat from the sun, turning off unnecessary lights, and changing the direction of the ceiling fans, Dominion said. Consumers can also reduce their monthly electric costs by at least 1 percent if they raise their thermostat to 78 degrees.

Some other low-cost ideas include using compact fluorescent lights, programming the thermostat, and installing weathering stripping, caulk and heat control film, Dominion advised. Using a microwave oven in place of a conventional one will also use less energy.

Consumers can get in touch with previous residents of the home they are moving into to get a better idea of what their monthly energy bills will be.
