Organization works to make alternative energy more accessible to homeowners

April 27, 2010 - In an effort to help residents save money on their utility bills, a Pendleton, Oregon-based organization has launched an initiative to make renewable energy systems more affordable.

Town officials recently created a group called Solarize Pendleton, which offers homeowners who live within a 60-mile radius of the village free solar site assessments and group discounts on solar energy systems. Using state and federal tax credits as well as other incentives, the group is able to reduce the price of a residential solar system by nearly 80 percent to approximately $1,230 per home. In addition, project organizers are hosting workshops on the benefits of alternative energy systems through the beginning of June.

Furthermore, the organization recently announced the availability of 50 zero-interest loans for homeowners whose houses are eligible for solar energy systems. Because the organization is only able to offer a limited number of loans, it will choose the beneficiaries through a lottery, which will be held next month.

Experts say that homeowners can cut their utility bills by nearly one-third by adopting clean energy.
