Colorado homeowners can rent solar panels

January 26, 2010 - Colorado residents who are considering converting to solar power, but are unwilling or unable to invest in panel installation, will soon have a new option to use alternative energy.

SunRun, a California-based solar company, has announced it will begin offering photovoltaic panel rentals to individuals in Colorado, 9 News reports.

Through a partnership with Xcel, a Colorado-based power provider, the company will charge customers a fixed monthly rate for energy. Consumers who exceed this monthly allotment will be billed by Xcel for the remainder of their usage costs.

Although participants in this program are required to pay $1,000 upfront for installation costs, company officials say that this package offers savings to solar power users. A typical residential system can cost up to $25,000 upfront and solar energy could save consumers up to 10 percent on their utility bills.

Because SunRun owns the panels, individuals who choose to rent their solar energy source will not be eligible for federal tax rebates.

The government's new Cash for Clunkers program, which will offer tax breaks to consumers who replace old appliance with more energy-efficient models, is slated to begin next month, the Rome News Tribune reports.
