Cold temperatures, bad weather increase the cost of utilities
January 26, 2010 - Low temperatures and unexpected weather have faced many homeowners and renters with unexpectedly high utility bills.
Cold weather has left many individuals struggling to pay for heat, particularly those who live in areas that have experienced unprecedented cold snaps this year.
In Florida, cold temperatures have resulted in power bills that have, in some instances, more than tripled, WTSP reports.
Fortunately, state programs exist for individuals who are unable to pay for their utilities, including senior citizens and families whose income is at or below the federal poverty level.
Some power providers, such as Progress Energy, have launched initiatives that allow their customers to help one another during difficult times.
The company's energy neighbor fund enables "existing customers, our employees and the corporation match funds to
provide assistance" to struggling consumers, Suzanne Grant, a company spokeswoman, told the media outlet.
Similar increases have occurred in South Carolina, where utility companies say high bills are the result of increased consumption as opposed to rising costs, the Times and Democrat reports.
In fact, the average cost of electricity in the state dropped by nine cents per kilowatt hour this year, according to the media outlet.
