Real estate brokers vs. real estate agents

November 20, 2010 - For many people, the process of selling your home can be a stressful one. Understanding the process can help to reduce some of the strain.

The real estate profession has both real estate agents and real estate brokers. Real estate brokers are licensed professionals who assist both the home sellers and homebuyers, states the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and they also manage real estate offices.

Real estate agents are licensed professionals who assist in the buying and selling process, notes the FTC. They help home sellers determine the value of their home and know the laws of buying and selling a property. They work under the supervision of real estate brokers and receive a portion of the commission earned on the sale or purchase of the property.

According to the FTC a traditional, full-service broker provides a range of services such as, helping to prepare the property for sale, advertising the home, arranging meetings with prospective buyers and arranging for the closing.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics indicates that there were 564,000 real estate agents and brokers in the country in 2006. Real estate agents held 77 percent of these jobs.
