Realtors proving valuable in home sales

March 2, 2011 - Homesellers around the country have expressed frustration in the current housing market, but a new report could show hiring a Realtor could be the best way for sellers to reach moving day sooner.

In a survey of more than 1,000 homeowners by HomeGain, 83 percent of respondents said they used a Realtor to sell their home while 17 percent said they attempted to go it alone. While 59 percent of those who had used an agent were successful in their sale, only 39 percent of for-sale-by-owner homes were able to sell.

That rate of success had a large impact on the sellers who did use a Realtor - 81 percent said they would use one again the next time they sold a home. In addition, 24 percent of homeowners who had attempted to sell their home on their own said they eventually called a Realtor.

"It is especially striking that homeowners fare significantly better in selling their homes using a Realtor than selling on their own," said Louis Cammarosano, general manager of HomeGain. "Due to that relative success, the level of satisfaction in the home selling process is also higher for home sellers utilizing the services of a Realtor than those who try to sell their homes on their own."

Selling a home has been difficult for many consumers in today's market, as low home prices force many to settle for a lower return while anemic buyer interest leaves many unable to get their relocation plans going.
