Homeowners can prevent leaks, expensive home repairs

January 7, 2010 - Real estate owners may want to give special attention to their roofs during winter months, as a heavy build-up of snow could lead to leaks or costly home repairs.

Rick Casey, owner of Casey Roofing in Sioux City, Iowa, told KTIV that individuals who wait too long to clear snow from their rooftops could put themselves at risk for a great deal of leak-based damages.

Roof leakage can ruin sheet rock, insulation and wood near gutters, he said.

Approximately 90 percent of these leaks occur at flashlings, which are transitional roof materials, according to AsktheBuilder.com

Houses and apartments with poor ventilation systems are more susceptible to leaks, as heat that has risen to an attic can cause the snow to melt and cause icicles, which are a warning sign of a poorly insulated roof, according to the KTIV.

Casey suggests homeowners add additional ventilation to the sides of their homes to prevent heat from rising and clear the snow off the top of their homes in an efficient manner.

"Drag the snow, get…some salt and put it on the roof to relieve the pressure off it," he told the news source.
