Waco considered best place to retire for military

December 8, 2010 - When looking to put up their feet and retire after a career in the military, retirees would be best suited moving to Waco, Texas.

A study by the USAA and Military.com found that the city's low unemployment, strong economic base and favorable homebuying conditions make it a promising relocation destination for personnel retiring from their military stint and moving into civilian career. Waco's proximity to Fort Hood and a number of veteran's services keep military retirees within arm's reach of a number of beneficial amenities, while the city itself offers a picturesque and easygoing lifestyle.

Oklahoma City finished second on the list, while Austin, Texas, came in third. College Station, Texas, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, rounded out the top five.

"Most military members face two retirements - one from a military career and one from a civilian career," said Kevin O'Fee, assistant vice president of retirement strategies at USAA. "The list gives veterans a head start on planning both the second and third acts of their lives, which likely involves a new community, a new home and a new financial plan."

Those moving to Oklahoma City would also enjoy close access to Tinker Air Force Base, a major station for the U.S. Air Force and the Navy, as well as medical services offered through a local VA hospital.
