Quality photos may help generate listing interest

October 5, 2010 - Many sellers are having to postpone moving plans while they wait for their old home to sell. But an attractive real estate listing might help these homeowners relocate sooner.

Their listing's most useful tool might be photographs, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Citing data from the Seattle-based real estate brokerage Redfin, the report showed that listings that have higher quality photos typically sell quicker and for more money. The company's analysis found that sellers who used better photos of their properties were able to net anywhere from $934 to $116,076 more than sellers who simply posted photos that were taken with standard point-and-shoot cameras.

Even higher-priced listings typically used poorer quality photos - the analysis found that more than 50 percent of listings over $1 million used point-and-click cameras. Additionally, only 15 percent of overall listings used higher-quality photos. But the analysis found that the benefits were more likely to be found with homes that were listed for at least $300,000.

Real estate professionals have long touted the value of high-quality photos for people who are considering moving and want to sell their homes. A report this summer from the New York Times found that many sellers were even hiring professional fashion photographers to take pictures of their homes for sale.
