NYC tops among restaurants per capita

February 1, 2011 - Food enthusiasts the world over often pack their moving boxes and head to New York City in order to regularly sample the city's diverse flavors.

They're sure to find variety when they get there - data from Pinpoint Demographics shows the city's Tribeca neighborhood has the highest number of restaurants per capita, at 496. Tribeca wasn't the only corner of Manhattan to rank high, no less than six others made the top ten. Officials with the research firm said New York's affluence, diversity and lifestyle contribute to a thriving dining scene, which attracts relocating families from all around the world.

"New Yorkers' appreciation for restaurants stems from a culmination of all of [these] factors, coupled with New York City's rich culinary history, diversity, tradition, innovation and passion for all things culinary," explained Andrew Rigie, director of operations at the New York State Restaurant Association. "Restaurants are also great places for New Yorkers' favorite pastimes, celebrating and conducting business, which definitely feeds into New York City's appreciation for restaurants."

Midtown and Clinton, Manhattan, tied for second on the list, while Midtown East, Sutton Place, SoHo, Washington Square and Northern Little Italy were among other top-regarded neighborhoods.

The city's restaurants will be in particularly high demand for this Sunday's Super Bowl, according to Zagat, which lists Carmine's, Fatty Johnson's and Rosa Mexicano as several top spots to catch the game.
