New York, New York

New York City is a compilation of several neighborhoods scattered among the city's five boroughs. These burrows each have a personality of their own and include Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. New York City is a city of staggering contrasts, diversity and culture, and ranks among history's great trade and cultural centers. From Wall Street to the UN, the world's most powerful and prominent men and women have found success in New York above all other places. Its population is made of people from every country on the globe, bringing a variety of culture and viewpoints. With all of these exciting opportunities, New York is an exciting moving destination.

History:
In the 18th century, England's unfair actions on the American colonies brought about protest and eventually revolution. Early on, General George Washington's army suffered a series of defeats and barely escaped capture. The British took the city and stationed itself there. At the end of the war, Washington was sworn in as the first president on the steps of New York's Federal Hall; however, New York's stint as the US capital was short-lived. Political squabbling eventually lead to the newly created District of Columbia being named the new capital. However, the 1792 founding of the New York Stock Exchange launched the city as a financial epicenter, and the Erie Canal strengthened the city's position as a national trade center. By the 1920s, all of Manhattan was populated. Harlem, which had started as a Dutch farm, now attracted New York African-Americans as well as those migrating from the South. The decade ended, however, with a crash on Wall Street, leading to the Great Depression. In 1972, completion of the World Trade Center changed the city’s skyline. The 110-story structures commonly known as the "Twin Towers" was destroyed on September 11, 2001 due to a terrorist attack on the country.

Economy:
New York is an energetic center for business and one of the three cities that control world finance. Manufacturing accounts for a large but declining amount of employment. Clothing and apparel, and furs, chemicals, metal products and processed foods are depended on for economic prosperity. The city is also a major center of book publishing, television broadcasting, advertising and other outlets of mass communication. New York City has become a key movie-making site in the 1990s, and it is an important art center, with artists revitalizing many of its neighborhoods. The city also home to two major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. With the city’s immense cultural and educational resources, famous shops and restaurants, places of entertainment and attractions, New York City draws millions of tourists every year, bringing in billions of revenue to the city.

Tourism:
New York City's boroughs are home to some of the country’s most identifiable and cherished landmarks and attractions in the world. Begin your experience at Time Square, one of the city’s most famous attractions. The stretch including massive digital billboards, star-studded Broadway shows, people peddling art and jewelry on the street and, of course, the Naked Cowboy, who plays guitar in his tighty-whities. Next, visit Central Park. Spanning 843 acres in the heart of Manhattan, Central was originally designed in the mid-19th century by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, today the park is the centerpiece of the City's public parks system. Among its landmarks are Wollman Rink and the Central Park Zoo—great for kids of all ages. Ready for some shopping? Actually measuring a little longer than a mile, the famed “Magnificent Mile” is a beloved stretch of Fifth Avenue, from East 82nd to East 105th Streets, lays claim to one of the world's densest concentrations of culture. And of course no trip to the Big Apple would be complete without a stop by the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps New York City's most familiar historic landmark, the Statue of Liberty is just a short ferry ride away and makes for hours of exploration.
