Milwaukee nonprofit relocating to downtown warehouse

August 24, 2010 - A vacant warehouse in downtown Milwaukee that had been tabbed for a condominium development will be converted into an office building for a local nonprofit.

The building at 728 North James Street was once scheduled to be converted into condos, but investor Dave Jorgensen bowed out of that project and sold the property to Community Advocates, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The organization, which provides services to low-income clients, is relocating to the warehouse in an effort to consolidate four separate offices.

Construction on the building's conversion will begin next month and is expected to be completed by December, said the report. Community Advocates purchased the warehouse for $1.8 million earlier this year and hopes to finance its $2.65 million renovation through city-issued bonds. The city's Redevelopment Board was expected to address that financing at last Thursday's meeting.

The warehouse has stood vacant for 15 years but will soon house 110 relocated employees, said the paper.

Similar corporate relocation projects have reenergized other cities in the Midwest. Quicken Loans recently received praise from locals for moving its corporate headquarters into the Compuware building in downtown Detroit.
