Historic Gingerbread House in Maine to be relocated down the street

Maine's governor has approved land for the historical "Gingerbread House" in Norway, Maine, which will be relocated late this summer.

Maine's Sun-Journal reports that the 150-year-old house will be moved just down the street, where Governor John Baldacci has approved use of a small parcel of Department of Transportation land.

The current owners postponed demolition until a local organization could find the funds and land to move the historic building, reported the Sun-Journal.

Relocating the old house will require some work. The news source said the chimney and porch will be taken apart first and a few trees will be removed.

The Norway Landmarks Preservation Committee has formed the Friends of the Gingerbread House, and has about $277,000 to pay for the relocation and some routine repairs.

Norway's city website lists the Evan's Cummings House, as it was originally known, as one of 24 sites on its historical walking tour.

There is a "garage" (originally for a horse carriage) that has a rotating platform to avoid having to back a car out of the building.
