Dayton mayor wants relocation funds to bring in new businesses

August 10, 2010 - The mayor in Dayton, Ohio, wants to put an end to giving relocation money to existing downtown businesses that sometimes simply move across the street.

A practice designed to attract new businesses to downtown Dayton has turned into paying businesses to stay, Mayor Gary Leitzell told the Dayton Daily News.

"They come to us and line up and say our lease is up, what is the city going to do to keep us here," Leitzell told the Daily News. The mayor would rather use the money to attract new businesses.

The city has spent $400,000 in taxpayer dollars to six firms, only two of which actually moved to Dayton from another city.

David Reed, a partner at the law firm Taft, Stettinius and Hollister, told the Daily News that the $100,000 the city gave them to move offices on Main Street wasn't enough.

Dayton has been trying to revamp the city's real estate and create a hub of business.

In July, Dayton received a $3.5 million state grant to renovate the former headquarters of NCR Corp., creating a research and technology complex that can partner with the University of Dayton, reported the university news website.
