Beware of scam artists when planning a move

May 21, 2010 - Those getting ready to hire professional movers should take care not to become victims of fraud, a fact which was illustrated recently by a Toronto police crackdown on multiple dishonest moving firms.

The story of Leslie Nye, as told to the Globe and Mail newspaper, was typical: Nye received an attractive quote from the moving company, but when the movers actually arrived, they added on dozens of unexpected charges, including $30 each time an item was moved downstairs. "The conversation between my husband and I on our way to London was ‘What can we do? They've got our stuff, they've got our money. We're screwed,'" Nye told the newspaper.

The Globe and Mail said that nine people were arrested in connection with this and other incidents and were charged with a total of 160 fraud-related offenses.

Experts say that any mover that offers a "too-good-to-be-true" quote or asks that a contract be signed on the day of the move is likely to be untrustworthy. Consumers can be on the hook for thousands more than they bargained for if they're not careful.
