Better Business Bureau offers tips to avoid moving company scams

May 5, 2010 - In an effort to protect individuals who are planning a move in the coming months, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) have created a series of guidelines for those who will require the services of a moving company, The Daily Advertiser reports.

Before selecting a moving company, consumers can use BBB services to check an organization's credentials. In fact, more than 1 million individuals relied on this resource last year.

Additionally, all movers must be licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Licensed professionals should be able to provide a motor carrier number, which can be verified at the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) website. Only licensed moving companies can be ranked by the BBB, and the AMSA authorizes these businesses according to their BBB evaluation.

A total of 17,000 reliability reports on movers located across the country are available to the public through the BBB, according to the news source.

Using these resources could help homebuyers and renters prevent scams from rogue movers, which have been popping up more frequently in recent years, according to the DOT website.
