California utility companies announce plans to store energy, save consumers money

January 28, 2010 - Utility companies in California have announced they will install a system of energy-storage devices that are intended to reduce the amount of electricity used by air conditioners, the Wall Street Journal reports.

These machines will store energy that is produced during daytime hours when the demand is highest and reuse it during the evening when less power is needed. The storage devices will be produce ice during low-demand hours, which will be used to cool the refrigerant in air conditioning units and lower temperatures.

Representatives from the Southern California Public Power Authority told the media outlet they expect the devices, which are produced by Colorado-based company Ice Energy, produce up to 53 megawatts of power during non-peak times to reduce the strain on climate control machines in the daytime.

Bill Carnahan, the company's executive director, told the news source that adoption of this technology in its 11 municipal utilities could "offset enough peak demand in the region to serve the equivalent of 10,000 homes."

Homeowners and renters may want to consider purchasing similar innovative machines, as they could help them save money on their energy costs and earn tax rebates through government's renewed Cash for Clunkers program for energy-efficient appliances.
