Silicon Valley city to provide multi-family housing options for relocating residents

August 11, 2010 - With Silicon Valley's techies facing limited choices when relocating, the affluent city of Monte Sereno is being asked to comply with California state law and provide multi-family housing.

City Manager Brian Loventhal said at an August 3 city council meeting that the state could "put a moratorium on future development," effectively forbidding any new building permits, reported the Los Gatos Weekly Times.

Monte Sereno, a small town that is entirely composed of single-family residences, attempted to lay out a plan for multi-family housing and apartments in 2002, but never moved forward.

Some residents of the city told the city council meeting and the Weekly Times they are afraid multi-family housing will bring crime and lower property values.

Monte Sereno's vice mayor, Lana Malloy, told the Silicon Valley Mercury News that residents are wary of zoning changes.

"We probably felt that we were this little island of single-family homes in a rural area, and we wanted to keep it that way," Malloy told the paper.

Other nearby cities in the San Francisco Bay Area are expanding multi-family affordable housing.

Palo Alto will open a 56-unit, low-income senior apartment complex this week. Rents will run between $443 and $742 per month.
