Retirees exchange work for rental costs

February 18, 2010 - Individuals who are having trouble paying their rent or mortgage bills may want to consider some housing options that allow them to travel and work for room and board.

This trend has proven popular among some senior citizens who are trading their volunteer services for a place to park their mobile homes, the New York Times reports.

As a solution to budgetary issues, parks, wildlife agencies and campgrounds across the country have begun hiring travelling retirees to pick up trash, lead tours or serve as birdwatchers. In return, these volunteers are allowed to park their campers on their employer's premises free of charge.

Industry experts expect that the number of these individuals - dubbed "work-campers" - has reached approximately 80,000 nationwide.

Work-campers say that financial hardship, enhanced social interaction and a love for travel are their primary reasons for participating in these programs.

Similar opportunities could give renters an adventurous way save money on their housing costs.

According the RealFact.com, average rent in the U.S. dropped 6.1 percent last year to $933 per month, the Daily Skiff reports.
