Organizations launch efforts to help pet-owning renters

March 16, 2010 - In an effort to help pet owners find homes for themselves and their animals, the San Francisco Commission of Animal Control and Welfare has released a series of solutions for these house hunters, the Golden Gate XPress reports.

Recent research from the commission found that while 80 percent of its residents are renters, only half of the city's rental homes are pet-friendly. As a result, the organization has discussed a proposal to require the city to have a certain amount of residences that welcome animals and a website that could help prospective tenants find these homes.

Members of the organization have also suggested a voluntary 5 percent rent increase for pet-owning renters, which could serve as a deposit for any damages caused by a domestic animal.

San Francisco-based pet owners may choose to participate in programs that can help them establish an open and honest relationship with their landlords, such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (SPCA) Open Door initiative.

Through the program, each landlord and tenant draws up a mutual agreement that outlines a list of guidelines for responsible pet ownership in order to prevent potential conflicts, according to the San Francisco SPCA website.
