Becoming a smarter renter

June 10, 2010 - When moving time came along, renters had the upper hand for quite some time. However, economic conditions have improved and landlords are less willing to negotiate, which means consumers need to beef up their real estate knowledge if they want the best deal.

Summer signals the start of the competitive, busy rental season. Some larger real estate markets - like metropolitan areas - can be overwhelming to renters. In situations like these, using a broker may give a consumer the extra advantage they need, the New York Times said.

Gathering as much rental industry information as possible is key to consumers getting a good deal on their home, the newspaper said. Scouring websites to increase a person's knowledge base is by far the most convenient route to take.

However, since there's no central place for this rental information "it is almost like fishing in the dark," Platinum Properties executive vice president Danny Hedaya told the Times. Although this may seem like a daunting task, the effort expended for this knowledge is likely to pay off in the end.

Relocation can be a tricky process. However, coming up with a well-thought-out plan and staying organized can make the endeavor run much more smoothly.
