Bad design and decoration could be a criminal offense

February 26, 2010 - Individuals who are planning on moving into a new apartment may want to be clear on their landlord's policies concerning décor and remodeling, as one couple was recently sued for a furnishing faux pas.

The New York Times reports that the Paramount Realty Group of America has filed suit against Icelandic investment tycoon Jon Asgeir Johannesson and his wife for installing an IKEA kitchen into a $300,000 rental home.

Company lawyers allege that the inexpensive furnishings were "ugly" and therefore unsuitable for the luxurious apartment, which is located on the 16th floor of the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.

In addition, Paramount claims that the couple did not complete their planned home repair and maintenance projects on time.

Renters should consult their landlords before making any renovations or structural changes to their homes, as they may need to draw up contractual agreements that could prevent liabilities on both ends. Individuals who live in a co-op building and wish to make home improvements to their residences are required to sign an alteration agreement, which clarifies the terms and conditions of a project as they apply to tenants and shareholders, according to The Cooperator.
