Homeowners can protect themselves from construction scams

January 6, 2010 - Although scams regarding home repair have recently emerged in certain areas of the country, individuals who wish to make improvements to their houses can protect themselves from fraud.

In Woodburn, Oregon, police recently issued a warning to residents informing them of suspected construction scams, the Statesman Journal reports.

Police Sergeant Jason Tlusty told the media outlet that the potential scammers were going door-to-door soliciting roof repair, gutter service and other home repair work.

Tlusty suggests individuals who are interested in these services ask for a business card with a Construction Contractors Board (CCB) number on it to verify that the solicitor is qualified to perform such work.

Homeowners can check the validity of a worker's CCB number on the organization's website, where a professional can be traced using their employer's name, license number or business telephone number.

Real estate owners who are planning to make repairs to their property may consider using the services of similar organizations before they hire a contractor.

Individuals who are wary of letting strangers into their home may want to consider taking classes and purchasing materials that can allow them to perform do-it-yourself repairs.
