Windy City among best cities for young adults

August 4, 2010 - For young adults looking for the amenities of New York City at half the cost, moving to Chicago may be the answer.

The city was listed as one of Kiplinger's top 10 great cities for young adults. Not only is Chicago a hotbed for culture - with world-renowned theater groups, beloved sports teams and popular music festivals - the median monthly rent for an apartment is just $861. That's only slightly above the national average of $819 but much lower than New York City's median rent of $1,025, said Kiplinger's. That said, Chicago's Midwest location leaves it slightly isolated from other major cities like it.

If easy access to other major cities appeals to a young person, they may want to consider moving to New York City or Austin, Texas, both of which were also on Kiplinger's list. Some other under-the-radar cities were also in the top ten, including Kansas City, Missouri and Portland, Oregon.

Anyone considering moving to the big city should consider the apartment rates in that town. Moving into a smaller rental can be made easier through the use of mobile storage units.
