North Dakota tops list of nation's strongest economies

July 26, 2010 - It might not immediately cross one's mind to relocate to North Dakota, but given that state's current economic climate, moving there might not be a bad idea.

The state is in the midst of healthy job growth and a rock-bottom unemployment rate of just 3.6 percent, according to Portfolio.com's most recent State-by-State Midyear Employment Rankings. Since 2005, North Dakota has enjoyed a 7.8 percent surge in job growth, which works out to about 21,300 new jobs in five years - the largest such increase nation-wide. The state's Employment Score was far and away the best on the survey, coming in at 20.36.

Second on the list was Alaska, which added about 10,100 new jobs since 2005, an increase of 4.4 percent. Texas came in third, with the private sector experiencing a 5.9 percent boost in job growth.

Several states experienced a reversal of fortune. California, Florida, and Nevada topped the 2005 list, but currently have the nation's worst economies because of low employment and poor housing markets, according to the survey.

While North Dakota doesn't have the favorable climate of those states, it does have the economic growth to reel in job seekers.
