Mitt Romney hires a wrecking crew in California

August 24, 2011 - Mitt Romney is keeping busy despite his grueling presidential campaign schedule. In addition to the appearances that have Romney moving from coast to coast, the former Governor will also be calling in contractors and tearing down his beach front property in La Jolla, California, according to the Zillow Blog.

Romney purchased the real estate for $12 million in 2008 and has filed an application to tear down the existing structure to make way for a two story building that could accommodate his large extended family. While the actual home and driveway would be removed and replaced, the plans state that the Romney's intend to leave the existing pool and spa as is, The Los Angeles Times explains.

The home that is set to meet the wrecking ball was built in 1936, and has two bedrooms and 3,009 square feet of living space. The homeowners also have private beach access and spectacular ocean views which can be better appreciated from the home's back deck, the Zillow Blog reports.

The new structure will be four times the size of the current estate, but construction will not begin until after Romney's campaign is completed, according to the source.
