Tips for moving with kids

According to the source, it is important to have a family meeting upon deciding to relocate. This time can allow families to discuss feelings about the move and help develop a  plan for packing. Families who aren't moving far may choose to select a home together, while long distance moves may limit that opportunity.

As with all moves, purging items can make moving boxes much easier. Getting rid of personal items is sometimes more difficult for children, so parents may want to include them when eliminating items throughout the entire home first before sorting through toys and old clothing.

Parents are also advised to research their new neighborhood and community to make sure their kids will like their new schools and know options for local activities and events.

Leaving behind friends and family can cause children to be resistant to moving, but TLC says hosting a party can make the move more exciting. Parents should make an effort to gather contact information from neighborhood friends and those from school so children can keep in touch after relocating.
