Shopping around can save on a move

July 28, 2010 - People who are moving might sometimes choose to hire the first moving company they found off a Google search or in the phone book.

That kind of careless approach could cost them thousands of dollars, resulting in the hire of a company that is overpriced and unqualified, reported the Denver Post. Consumers should put as much care into researching their move as possible, because the right company can lead to a stress-free move.

When researching, a person should search for at least three separate quotes from companies that have been licensed through their state. Consumers can also perform their own background check on a company by looking them up with government agencies, like the Better Business Bureau, said the Post.

If possible, a person should also be flexible with when they want the company to move their belongings. They should compare rates for moves on different days of the week and go with the option that's most affordable. Finally, moving insurance can be the last line of defense against damage or loss, said the paper.

Combining the services of a company with a self-move can also cut down on the costs of relocating.
