BBB warns to avoid scammers on moving day

May 13, 2010 - The economic downturn has caused many people to move out of one location and into another to help cut costs, but these movers might want make sure they're safe and avoid being scammed when they're packing up their belongings.

In honor of National Moving Month, the Better Business Bureau is warning movers that some people might be looking to take advantage of them during what might be one of their most vulnerable times.

Linda Bauer Darr, president and CEO of the American Moving and Storage Association, says homeowners and renters should do their research on people they're trusting with their valuables.

"Virtually anyone with a truck and a website can claim to be a mover and they can't all be trusted to adhere to standards for honesty and ethical conduct," she said.

To avoid falling victim, the BBB suggests consumers take a number of steps to vet the people who will be helping them on moving day. Included in those suggestions is getting numerous estimates from movers - the BBB advises at least three - and doing thorough research on a company that will be helping with the relocation.
