Young workers moving into smaller urban condos

July 14, 2010 - Oftentimes, affordable homeownership and urban living don't quite go hand-in-hand.

Typically, if a person wanted to buy a home in the city, he or she would have to be able to afford an expensive condominium or townhouse. High prices have forced many hopeful homeowners into moving to suburban locales. But potential buyers can now find affordable homes within city limits - as long as they're willing to compromise on size.

Down-scaled urban condos - many no larger than 600 square feet - are becoming a popular buy among young city dwellers, reported MSNBC. Although they're drastically smaller than most condos, the spaces allow these homeowners to stay close to major commercial centers and still afford the cost of a home.

"For Generation Y, the home is a place to live out of, not to live in," John McIlwain of the Urban Land Institute told MSNBC, "They don't think of this as a sacrifice. It’s just their lifestyle."

Moving to a smaller home in the city means shedding and selling off many personal goods. A mover can rent a smaller storage unit or pod to save money on transporting their bare necessities to their new home.
