Yankees Single-A affiliate could relocate to Orlando

September 7, 2010 - A minor league affiliate for the New York Yankees may be relocating to the Orlando area.

The Tampa Yankees have been the Single-A affiliate for the major league club since 1994, but last week, Orlando businessman Armando Gutierrez announced that he has engaged in ongoing negotiations with club officials that would move the team to Orlando, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

Currently, the ownership group is looking to secure a building site for a new ballpark. Gutierrez also said that he envisions building a baseball museum that would complement the new stadium, said the report.

"Until we secure a site, there's still a chance that this could not happen," Gutierrez told the paper. "But if the county works with us to get us a site, we will make this happen."

The Tampa Yankees' current home field is Steinbrenner Field, named after the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who passed away this summer. The Yankees have long had strong roots in Tampa because Steinbrenner lived there, and the club also has a spring training facility in the city. A Forbes report speculated that by reducing their presence in Tampa, Yankees ownership may be hinting towards a future sale of the major league franchise.
