Top five retirement locations

June 1, 2010 - It's not uncommon to move after retirement, and finding the perfect relocation neighborhood can be a challenge.

Fortune Magazine recently compiled the top five places to retire, considering a number of factors. Moving after retirement can be stressful, but finding the right community can alleviate these worries.

Napa, California made the top five due in part to the fact that home prices have fallen more than 50 percent since peak periods, Fortune said. In addition to more affordability, residents can enjoy local wine culture and a laid-back retired life. Ann Arbor, Michigan also made the list because of its reputation for world-class healthcare and a stable economy and real estate market.

Retirees should also consider San Antonio, Texas. With stable housing prices and no state income tax, this could be retirement heaven for some. Greenville, South Carolina, along with its physical beauty, also has a strong cultural scene. Rounding out the list is Palm Coast, Florida, which has a number of outdoor activities and reasonable home prices.

More than 13 percent of the U.S. population is 65 years or older, Squiddo.com said. The number of communities catering to their needs is growing and should provide more options when it comes to moving during a person's retirement years.
