Survey: Number of job seekers relocating to a new city unchanged since recession

August 6, 2010 - A new survey in North Carolina shows that the number of people who relocate for a new job is similar to figures from before the economic recession of 2008.

Right Management, the career transitioning division of Manpower, Inc., surveyed 772 people in North Carolina that it had helped in their career search. The survey found that 23 percent moved to a new city for their job - roughly the same proportion as 2007.

"It is reassuring that relocation choices actually turned out to be consistent with the data tracked prior to the recession," Russ Settles, the Right Management's market vice president in the Carolinas, told the Triangle Business Journal.

Settles has tips for people thinking about relocating to a new area, noting that people must consider what's most important.

"For some, relocating may not be desirable, but for others it may be a wonderful adventure," Settles said to the news source.

The relocation statistics for North Carolina were higher than the national average of 15 percent, but the state's unemployment rate currently stands at 10.1 percent, only slightly higher than the 9.5 percent national unemployment figure.
