Should you purchase used furniture?

July 9, 2012 - When moving into a new, larger home, many households suddenly realize they need a great deal more furniture so they don't have a number of empty rooms in their new homes. But is used furniture the way to go?

After spending money on their new place and a moving company, many people may look to buy used furniture to save money. This can result in significant savings if people are willing to compromise somewhat on the style of the furniture they buy.

It may also offer advantages in quality, as a higher-end used piece may still last longer than a new, cheaper version of the same product.

However, there are also drawbacks as well. Buying something used means you also don't have any control over where it's been or if its owners have taken proper care of it. Another valid concern is bedbugs, which can live in furniture and spread throughout a home if brought inside. This is why picking up furniture curbside can be an issue.

The National Pest Management Association suggests inspecting all second-hand furniture - perhaps with expert help - before bringing it inside and potentially spreading an infestation.
