Saving money on a move

June 23, 2010 - Relocation costs can be considerable. However, there are some things a person can do in order to save money on their next move.

Being organized is key to a successful move, and planning it out with a checklist is advised, Kerry Taylor wrote for U.S. News and World Report. Knowing the costs beforehand can help a person avoid any last-minute, unexpected fees.

Part of a moving list should include an inventory of all of the items in a person's home, Taylor said. If anything is lost or damaged in the process, a claim can be made, lessening the expense of purchasing something like a new piece of furniture or a computer.

Moving should be seen as an opportunity to downsize, Taylor said. The fewer things there are to pack, the less expensive it will be.

If a renter is moving, they should consider leasing a smaller space. They should also take the time to find out what average utility costs are and if any amenities are included, Taylor advised.

Experts say that if a person is moving for a new job, they should ask their employer if a relocation assistance program is available. This could greatly reduce the cost of relocation.
