San Francisco trying to relocate homeless from transportation terminal

August 7, 2010 - A major hub for transportation in San Francisco will be demolished soon, and many of the homeless who have taken residence in the old building are being relocated by the city.

The Transbay Terminal, completed in 1939, is used as a shelter for many of San Francisco's homeless, as it provides warmth and a bathroom. But according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Mayor Gavin Newsom and his head of homeless policy, Dariush Kayhan, are working to relocate the two dozen remaining residents into more suitable housing.

The Transbay Terminal's homeless residents will first be set up in a transitional hotel, free of charge, until permanent housing is found. However, many homeless don't want to deal with the transition period and refuse help from the city.

"People end up doing six years on the street because they didn't want to do six months in a transition. That's the most frustrating part," Newsom told the Chronicle.

Last weekend Newsom toured the terminal in an effort to convince the few remaining homeless to take the city up on their offer for moving assistance.
