Rising waters threaten Minnewaukan citizens

July 13, 2010 - Residents of a lakeside town in North Dakota may be forced into quickly relocating.

The water level at nearby Devils Lake has been rising undeterred since 1993, already forcing one town, Churchs Ferry, into abandonment. Now many residents of Minnewaukan are taking Federal Emergency Management Agency buyouts and fleeing the town for higher ground as the lake waters rise higher than ever, reported the Bismarck Tribune. About 17 homes are expected to be lost this year, Mayor Trish McQuoid told the paper.

McQuoid is faced with the daunting task of deciding what to do with the remaining 318 residents. At worst, the town may have to be abandoned like Churchs Ferry. McQuoid would prefer to officially relocate the entire town to higher ground and start over with new property and infrastructure, even as many residents have started moving away on their own, said the report.

Moving can be difficult even with plenty of notice, so the burden of relocating in a hurry can put further stress on Minnewaukan residents. They can ease the process by renting a mobile storage unit to transport their belongings to their new homes.
